We are using this tripod/head to hold an Alpen 788 scope for birding. It seems like a good choice sturdy enough for the 3.5lb scope, yet light enough to carry around on long hikes. My only criticism is that the adjustment knobs aren't intuitive. It would be better if the handle for the video head did the vertical and horizontal adjustments (rather than two additional knobs).
