This is a video demo and testing of the Archos 43 16 GB Internet Tablet. Overall, I am very happy with its improvements over the Archos 5 IT. I have also changed the rating to a 5 stars after updating the OS to Android 2.2 with the Adobe Flash 10 player installed. This gadget rocks !

12/21/10 update

I have been using this gadget on a daily basis since my original post for checking emails and surfing the web for news in the morning while still lying lazy on my bed. So far so good and it has replaced my iPhone for such use as it is lighter and has a wider display for full web-site surfing. The only issue I have is the short battery life which I have to circumvent by disabling the Wifi when not in use.

Overall feel and handling

The unit is extremely light and fits easily in a shirt pocket. It is much more portable than the Archos 5 IT and even the i-Phone. The single-touch resistive screen works quite nice also. I also noticed that the camera has a small clear plaster cover on it which should be removed for better recording.

OS and applications

12/01/10 Update

Updated OS to Android 2.2 ! This gadget is a lot more stable and works faster after the update. We would need to reinstall the latest Google Marketplace app from the Archos fans site as the previous version does not work with Android 2.2. The Adobe Flash 10 player would also needed to be installed (from the Google Market place) in order to view flash videos from the websites.

Archos 5 used to have an application called Thinkfree office installed which allowed us to view PDF, excel, and word document. I am not able to find this same application on the Archos 43. However, this application and the Adobe viewer could be downloaded from the Google Markletplace. Do some research on the Archosfans website and you would be able to get the instructions on installing the Marketplace app.

Video and display

The display is very nice and sharp. In the demo video, I also showed a side-by-side comparison between an i-Phone and the Archos 43. The display area for the Archos 43 is 32% larger than an iPhone. Whereas the Archos 5 IT has a 65% larger display area over the iPhone with its 4.8" screen. Even though the display area is not much larger than the iPhone, the viewing experience is notably different. The video camera recording is of average quality. It does OK in well lighted area but the video is pretty grainy under poor lighting conditions. I also found some issues with the Amazon's Kindle viewer. The right side text was chopped off by the menu bar.

Sound

The external speaker is much better than the Archos 5 IT and produced much more sound in comparison.

WiFi and internet connection

There are major improvements in the Wifi connection as I experienced no trouble connecting the WiFi to my home wireless network. This was the most annoying problem I had with the Archos 5 IT.

Batteries

Charge time is much better than the Archos 5 IT. Took about 2-3 hours for a full charge. It lasts for about 2-3 hours of constant uses. If we leave the Wifi on, it seems to drain the battery charge rather rapidly. I did another benchmark testing by playing only video with the external speaker at 50% volume. It ran for a good 6-7 hours on a full charge.

It uses a standard micro-USB cable for connection to the PC.

Overall, I am quite pleased with this gadget particularly its light weight and larger screen size than my iPhone.

I just received my TV, set it up and tested it out. First of all, installation was a breeze, camera and mic work beautifully as do the motion controls.

More importantly, the image is perfect. I don't know what these other reviewers are going on about but screen uniformity is phenomenal and on par with any of the other LED LCD tvs I've seen. Blacks are deep and inky and with the backlighting on the factory default, I saw no evidence of flashlighting or light creep.

3D works like a charm. Set the PS3 to recognize the new screen and the new 3D glasses pair with the TV quickly and easily and don't mind at all if I look away from the screen. Tested out Transformers 3D (don't laugh, I have 6 year old son and he loves them) and the image was crisp, detailed with very little artifacting or crosstalk. I fired up wipeout HD 3D and that performed beautifully as well.

For me, it was between this TV and the new Panasonic line up. While I agree that the plasmas handle blacks better than LCD screens, I prefered the image crispness of an LED LCD panel. I am not disappointed and more than happy with the es8000.

I like it. The only thing I have to work on it keeping it in the right position, learning how to recognize when it is in voice activated mode and while walking the picture is not stable. Other than this, it takes better video than my 70 dollar video glasses that I returned. No one knows that it is a video camera unless you tell them.

Probably the best thing about this lens is that it is almost up to par with Olympus. At best, it is sharp, with beautiful bokeh, etc, etc. Typical quality we expect from Leica-like optics (this isn't really a leica lens, but as close as you can get from Panaasonic's factories.) The bad thing is that it is not nearly as well built as Olympus. No moisture protection, so with an E-3 not a great fit. Also, it suffered from the all-too-typical "Zoom Lock" problem. A screw gets loose and it won't zoom past 25mm or so. It was a fairly easy fix, but not for everyone. A little irritating for a lens costing this much. If you suffer from this problem, please search out on the internet for the repair instructions. The fix is available for the brave ones out there. That having been said, I do like this lens. Just not as much as my spectacular 12-60mm or 11-22, which are almost bullet-proof.

Camera takes great pics. Only problem I have with it is the flash....it is positioned on the top left of the camera and pops up every time it is needed....

the issue is, that most people put their finger on the top left of a camera when taking pics! Bad design otherwise, I do like it

I received the 18-250 prior to Christmas and used it throughout the Holidays taking about 500 snapshots, both with and without flash. What a workhorse this is! All the way from ultra-wide to fully extended, it was a consistently excellent performer. My K10d focused quickly and sharply starting with photo number one. Although I'm no professional, I do have a stable of pretty nice glass including the DA 21mm Limited pancake, the DA 16-45, & the FA 50mm 1.4 prime. (Also owned the DA 18-55mm and the DA 55-200mm zoom which I've already sold). The clarity and sharpness of the 18-250 rivals the 16-45 (beats the 55-200 hands down) and -to my eyescomes close (but not quite) to the excellent primes, though obviously not as fast. Alas, my 16-45 is now completely redundant and I put it on Ebay today. When you consider the excellent performance of this lens all along the length of its tele range, I believe that it truly could become a do-it-all replacement for most of your medium range zooms while doing a very respecable job at the 18mm wide angle. This lens surpassed all of my expectations and I give Kudos to Pentax for offering this in their digital lineup. Wish it had been there earlier and I could have avoided the expensive migration. I've heard comments that it is a bit pricey I don't think so. It represents great value in a high quality optic that can cover a wide range of photographic opportunities. My prints and slide shows resulting from the 18-250 mounted to my K10d are vivid, sharp, and colorful and have made my photography hobby more joyful and enjoyable than ever. People are impressed with how consistently beautiful & clear my photos are. And isn't that really why we shutterbugs enjoy making memories with photos? If you can get one, try it. . I think you'll love it. It really deepens my appreciation for the reasons I chucked the point-and-shoot digitals for the flexibility and superiority of the DSLR. Cheers.

Due to the fact that all projector performance gets better with each generation (even as the cost goes down), I always expect to be pleasantly surprised by each new projector's performance and cost.

Having said that, I'm "surprisingly surprised". This projector is amazingly good, and perfect for its intended application, which is for use within rooms that have perfectly normal amounts of ambient light. The trade-off for this much brightness is this: IF you're using it in a room that IS darkened, I believe you will find the dark picture elements to be brighter than you might like, EVEN THOUGH the contrast ratio between the light and the dark are as good as on any projector. In other words, this projector is a gift from the gods in the well-lit conference room (or un-darkened living room) because it can create beautiful, bright 100+ inch 1920x1080 projections without making the room less usable (by dimming the lights or drawing the shades). By extension, if you are buying a projector for a darkened home theater, there are projectors optimized for THOSE design priorities. In other words, not all top-of-the-line projectors are good at the same things. Cars are cars, trucks are trucks. Cars are not BAD trucks, they're just NOT trucks. I expect that at some point in the near future, a misinformed or ignorant buyer will review this projector and complain that it's "too bright" for their darkened room.

Within two weeks of receiving this, we purchased two more units.

Noteworthy Attributes:

-Unusually bright: Perfectly adequate in a well lit-room

-Unsusally quiet: Fan is less noisy than comperable models

-Unusually loud: Built-in speakers enable 'real' presentation audio w/o external speakers.

-Network attached: Allows you to attach to a host computer without any video cables.

-Lots of Inputs and Outputs: For "tweaking" to your needs (i.e. 12V signal to lower a screen).

-Good optical zoom range: Better than its peers (as of 11/6/2012) means you have more flexibility with placement.

I ordered from oppostyle website directly but no through amazon, received in 3 days. It is so beautiful and comfortable to use, I have not touched my old Nexus phone and tablet for a few days. I installed most of the apps I use, all worked out fine except a few that has compatibility issue. I'm not writing a comprehensive review but just leave a few points that may help others to decide in their purchase.

Hardware: build quality is flawless, 5 inch screen has amazing color that blows all cheap Samsung Nexus phones away. It makes big difference in reading and would not make my eyes tired. A little bit heavier but not significant than other 4.* inch phones.

Graphics: rendering is smooth, but to be picky, a little bit lag when scrolling heavy web pages comparing to Nexus 7 tablet and iphone, this is due to its higher resolution.

Network: Tmobile HSPA works with downloading speed 5Mbps for me.

Sound: Amazing speaker but can't quite tell difference to other phones with earbuds.

Camera: Much better than Galaxy Nexus but not super impressive, I think it has better hardware but software is not using best of it. Like the IQ better from the front camera.

Battery: Excellent. With 3G turned on and normal daily phone calls, it can last at least a day. With wifi on and lots of network/video activities for a few hours the battery dropped half or so. My estimation is for normal usage it will be fine with nightly charge, but if you go out and plan to play with it all day you need a power bank.

In general, I'm super happy with my purchase.

I bought this device here from Amazon a few months ago and wanted to give it a real workout before I wrote a review. I can't even describe how painful it would be to try and model something without this on my desk going forward. It's literally like reaching into your monitor and grabbing a mesh with your hand while you work on it with your regular mouse. That's not to say its a completely natural thing to pick up right away I imagine it has about the same learning curve as a Segway, where at first you'd swear a sneeze would cause you to run over the nearest 6 yr old, but soon with a little practice you're chasing down geese around the park while that tour guide is yelling at you. It comes with a little training program that helps, and the software lets you setup sensitivites in various axes to tune it to your liking. Took me about a week to really settle in to using it 100%, and most of that was breaking old habits.

The main benefit is really time savings. Even with extra mice buttons and keyboard shortcuts, you really cant Pan and Orbit and Zoom simultaneously with a standard planar 2D mouse. This guy has 6 degrees of freedom and can handle all that no problem. Often you have to stop whatever operation you're doing to manuever your work object and then go back to that operation. With this thing, it's like the program doesn't even know you're handling the object. Also, its got like 15 some buttons you can program (incl one that pops up an on-screen numpad) so you almost never need to touch the keyboard. I can honestly say after months of use, I'm completing projects 2-3 times faster than I was previously... and if that's worth $300 to you then definitely buy this bad boy right now.

To be fair and balanced, here's some of the downsides. Make sure you go to their website and do a product search for which software applications you can use this for before you get it. For example, it would be genius if this thing worked in either Mudbox or ZBrush for digital sculpting and painting. I stink at both those programs and it works great in 3DS Max so no problems for me personally though I do tend to grab it when working in UDK and wonder why nothing's happening. I also wish it had a simple power switch on it somewhere... One so it doesnt draw power off the USB port when I'm not using it, and two cuz when I hop into a game of BF3 I often wonder why my guy has Parkinsons until I remember to crawl under my desk and unplug this device.

Other than that LED is nice and strong, it's never lost calibration, never crashed a driver, hasn't given me carpaltunnel and it doesnt bug me about software updates every 7 days. Best thing I have connected to my computer.

I purchased this computer (S56CA-WH31) for my son to use at college, and have been configuring it for him for the past couple of days. Here are a few of my impressions so far:

The overall construction is very good except for one issue the DVD tray extends out from the side of the laptop by about 1 mm. One on-line reviewer noticed that the fit of the DVD tray was off in his review model also, but I am surprised that this got through into the production models. It is not a big issue, but it definitely detracts from the look of the aluminum body.

The screen is bright and clear and has good viewing angles. The keyboard is nice and big and works well with my hunt and peck. The large scroll pad is nice, and I am liking the imbedded buttons more than I thought I would.

The operating system is Windows 8 core (not pro). There is an ASUS-branded software DVD player, so I didn't have to upgrade to pro to get the windows media pack for DVD play as I feared I might have to. There is no utility to create recovery DVD's even though the paper manual refers to one called AI recovery. There is a Bluetooth module, so the "reviewer" who says that there isn't one is wrong.

The 500 GB hard drive is partitioned into a number of system and recovery partitions and a C: system partition of about 186 GB along with a D: data "drive" of about 258 GB. I used the Windows 8 disk manager to first remove the D: partition, expand the system "drive" to around 400 GB, and then used the rest of the space for a 39 GB D: drive just in case the recovery software expects to find the D: drive there.

I installed Start8 from Stardock to get a start menu back on the desktop, and have ordered a 4GB SODIMM to expand the memory up to 8 GB ($25) I figured more memory would be useful especially with the imbedded HD-4000 graphics.

I don't know what the reviewer who was complaining that this was a "slow" computer was talking about. It has a windows experience score of 4.8, which is not bad for an I-3 without turbo-boost and with imbedded graphics. It won't play highly graphics intensive games, but that's not what I bought it for, not should you expect it from the online specs.

Hope this is good enough for an initial review.

As with any major purchase I did so much research before selecting the Samsung UN60ES7500 60-Inch 1080p 240 Hz 3D Slim LED HDTV. I looked at all the major brands including LG, Sharp, Toshiba, Panasonic, and Sony. I spent several weeks in my free time doing this, reading and comparing specifications, and checking customer reviews on sites like Amazon and Google Shopping. Where available for each model I looked at I read CNET and Home Theater site reviews as well.

Based on the available technologies I had to decide between Plasma and LED for starters, and then Active or Passive 3D. From my research online I discovered there were proponents in each camp, and finally I reached critical mass and realized without some hands on comparison I would never be able to decide.

My older son and I went down to the local Best Buy and basically tried all the brands mentioned above and both active and passive 3D technologies. The Samsung UN60ES7500 immediately blew away the biggest myth I had read of with Active 3D and that's not having enough of a viewing angle when move away from the center of the screen. In 2D and 3D TV we could see the picture fine when being on so much of angle where you wouldn't be able to see the front of the TV!

The TV picture for both 2D and 3D is FABULOUS! Totally blows away, as I would expect, my 5 year old 50" Panasonic plasma, and my 2 year old LG 22" LED TV. I could not be more pleased!

On the rare occasions I use the pass-through mode of my AV receiver, the sound quality if the TV speakers is decent; certainly far better than the two aforementioned TVs.

Of course while doing my research I came across complaints for this line of TVs from Samsung, such as you could not use a mouse or keyboard with it, but under mine int he setup mode are setting for a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. I'll have to try that on a later date and update this report. I also read complaints of different color lines down the display, light bleeding around the edges, and other issues, but as I said previously the picture on this unit is amazing!

More than a few of the reviews I had read mentioned the Samsung line my TV was a part of were turning themselves off for no reason. I'm theorizing this might have been because they had automatic power setting set to do this, or perhaps the voice command feature misinterpreted some TV dialog as a command to turn off the set. One reviewer mentioned when they removed theirs from the network this issue stopped, mine has been on my home network since the day it arrived, with no issues. The wireless network setup was quick and easy in fact and I've had no network related issues on either of my home wireless networks, both of which use different security settings.

Speaking of Voice Commands, this is one of Samsung's 'Smart TVs', meaning you can use a set of predefined commands and hand gestures to control it.

It should be noted I did NOT buy the set for these features, which is good because they are, in my humble opinion, not ready for prime time. Trying to get the TV to recognize, even with the TV muted, voice commands is a hit or miss proposition. It either does not recognize the initial command phrase, or it can easily misinterpret commands. How it thinks "TV Power Off"is the command for "Current Time" is beyond me. The hand gesturing also needs work. Trying to get the on screen menu to come up when holding using the waving gesture it expects, even after going through the setup calibration, rarely works, but get a bit tired and raise your hands while stretching, and Bam! it appears!

Hopefully subsequent firmware upgrades will improve this, but if you main reason for getting a Smart TV is for these features, you will be sorely disappointed.

The TV comes with a number of pre-loaded applications, such as a Netflix library and there is an application store you can choose more from. There are both free and paid apps. As the TV has a built in camera, there is also a Skype application. This is also a decent web browser; with a wireless keyboard and mouse this would be a very easy way to surf the web, check your email, etc.

So, in closing, if you're looking for a TV based on being able to dump your remote and use hand gesturing and voice commands to control it, this is NOT the TV for you. You'll be very disappointed in the poor implementation of these features based on today's firmware.

If on the other hand you're looking for a large screen, network connected 3D HD TV with a fantastic picture, a boatload of applications, and a plethora of other features this is an ideal purchase.

Because of the poor implementation of the Voice Command and Gesturing features, I'd give this TV four out of five stars.

Updated 6/8/2012

Now that I've had this TV for just over a month I thought a brief update was in order. I've seen no issues that other people had reported such as the power going off, lines down the screen, dead pixels, etc.

From a display standpoint for regular and 3D material this unit is fantastic and I am still blown away by the picture. It responds well to action scenes for TV and Movies, and for video games as well from my Xbox 360 and Home Theater PC.

As to the Smart TV functions such as voice control and gestures, they still really stink but can be downright amusing at times! Try to get the gesture control to 'see' you and no luck.. Yawn or stretch a bit and there it is! What I really find funny is dialog on the TV will often pop up the dialog for voice control and it will think I want to turn off the TV.

But again, I must stress did not buy the TV for that functionality.

If these features worked well it would certainly be a plus, but since they do not my original rating of 4 out of 5 stars stands.

Updated 11/12/2012

It's been just over six months now and I figured I'd add a quick update. With the Smart Features (Voice and hand gesturing) turned off the TV is perfect! I've not had any trouble at all with this unit in six months and the picture remains fantastic.

CR123A batteries are expensive, but these are very reasonable. I have not used one of these all the way through yet, but upon initial use, these batteries seem the same as the expensive ones. Only down side is that the shipping cost of one lot of 10 cost as much as the batteries themselves, but still they are cheaper than buying 10 at the neighborhood store.

The Noctilux is large, heavy, and very expensive. You might think at this price and given its manufacturer that it would be optically perfect, much like the new APO 50 mm lens. Read the booklet that comes with it and learn about light fall-off and vignetting toward the edges of the lens. And then remember that this is one of the best lenses around. Despite the scary terms like vignetting etc., this lens is very, very good, and allows handheld shots in very dim light that would require a tripod with most other cameras and lenses. And that's the main point here why you would spend $3500 USD over the cost of the optically superior APO lens because you can carry the 'M' camera with lens in a small bag that doesn't make you look like a photographer, meaning you can get into more places and capture more images (and more interesting images) than you would carrying the typical camera bag and/or tripod.

The Noctilux physically is extremely well built and has accurate markings for f-stops with 1/2 stop indents, feet and metres for zone focusing, and a depth of field scale for apertures 0.95, 2, 4, 8, 11, and 16. You apparently have to interpolate for apertures between those values. The lens has electronic sensors that identify it to modern or upgraded 'M' cameras, and most of the relevant information is recorded in the image EXIF data. What's puzzling is the lack of f-stop number in that EXIF data, or even in the image playback on the LCD screen (Monochrom camera I don't know exactly what's recorded with other Leica cameras). This lens is physically focused with some effort, and would never auto-focus on a camera equipped with such a facility.

While the Noctilux has exceptional low-light capabilities due to the lens quality and f0.95 maximum aperture, the depth of field in actual shooting situations can be almost hair-thin. Some thought has to be given to how that DOF plays out on the target image and its contents, since with multiple objects in the frame, some are likely to be out of focus unless arranged at equal distances from the lens. Zone focusing is even trickier, and most of my attempts thus far have resulted in soft focus images. For zone focusing success with the Noctilux, I'd recommend setting up objects at various distances, guessing how far each is from the camera, then measuring those distances. After some practice the user should be able to zone focus with reasonable success. The technique I employ most often is to determine visually where I'm going to shoot from, guess the distance from there to the subject and set the lens accordingly, go there and take a couple of shots, then move slightly back and forth while taking shots at those additional distances. I think that's a better method than trying to focus the rangefinder in dim light in situations where you want to be low-key.

One drawback to the very large footprint of the Noctilux is that it partly obscures the 'M' camera rangefinder, making some exposures difficult to compose or even focus accurately. The built-in lens hood is straight not flared and it extends out from the lens about 1/2 inch and locks with a short twist. Given the design of the lens and the advanced coatings it has, I doubt that most users would need more than the built-in lens hood. The filter thread diameter appears to be about 59 mm, but that's not an official measurement. A lens cap, back cap, and deluxe leather pouch are included with the lens along with a booklet, warranty, and QC card with the signature of the QC agent.

The 40-150mm lens is fantastic. I've hardly taken it off my camera since I got it. However, I'm not sure if it was just a bit of bad luck but both the telephoto and wide angle lenses failed immensely. The amount of distortion was quite surprising, and with just about any zoom at all, any pictures taken with those were unusable. I had a fer of my friends who are neck deep into photography try it out to make sure it wasn't a user created problem (perhaps my memory had been wiped and I lost the ability to focus the camera?) but they each had the same problem. Quite disappointing :(

I was going to return it, but as I'm overseas the cost was just too much, and considering the macro add ons (which I haven't tested too much) and the filters, it was still worth the cost for me. And I really didn't want to let the 40-150mm lens go, even for a minute.

My main problem with this Compact Flash is that the "real-time" performance is very slow. I bought it a year ago for my 5-Megapixel camera, and it makes me wait a long time before I can take my next photo. This gets frustrating when you miss good photo opportunities.

Then, I read this article which reviews Compact Flash cards, and I realized that this particular SanDisk product line is inferior.

The review at DP Review says this Sandisk writes at 6x (where 'x' = 150 KB/sec). I since then, have purchased a 512MB Transcend compact flash which claims to Write at 25x. My camera works much faster now. I have borrowed my friend's IBM Microdrive and that is really fast too.
