** Updated July 1 **

This is hands down the best all-in-one Nikon lens for DX cameras. Well worth the price if an all-in-one lens is what you're looking for.

I bought the 18-300 DX for use on my D7000 as a replacement for my 18-200 DX and my 70-300 FX. With the 18-300, I can carry one lens instead of two, not worry about missing the shot because I have the wrong lens on the camera and minimize the number of times I'm swapping lenses and getting more gunk onto my sensor.

After real life usage of the 18-300 both on and off a tripod, I feel I am not giving up anything in terms of image quality with this lens over my 70-300. That's saying a lot, as the 70-300 in particular is a very high quality lens even though it isn't in Nikon's higher priced "professional" lens category. As compared to the 18-200, you do give up a bit of corner sharpness over the 18-28mm range, but gain center sharpness in that range, gain center and corner sharpness over the 70-200mm range and of course, get the extra 200-300mm range.

**** Overall handling ****

On a D7000, this lens feels well balanced to me. If you've used the 28-300 on an FX camera, it is very much the same feel, weight and size.

The lens handles very nicely. Good manual focus and smooth zoom with just enough stiffness that you really don't get much lens creep. There is a locking switch if you feel you need it (I generally haven't used the lock on my 18-200 VR II or my 28-300).

If you're used to the 18-55 kit lens, it's going to seem big and heavy, but after you get used to it, you'll love the range you're going to get and the image quality!

If you're used to the 18-200mm, it's almost an inch longer and 9 ounces heavier. If you don't need the extra 50% range at the long end, if you're happy with the 18-200 image quality and your primary goal is a small, light package, keep your 18-200. If you need the range and/or want higher IQ in the 70+ range and can afford the price, get the 18-300.

I'm used to the 70-300mm on my D7000 and the 18-300 is only 3 ounces heavier and almost one inch shorter.

The VR works well, just as it does on the 18-200, 70-300 and 28-300.

Auto focus seems to be accurate and fast in good lighting. Auto focus is a bit slower in marginal light, but no worse in my opinion than 18-200 or 28-300. The 70-300 seems slightly faster, but that is to be expected with the shorter focal range it has to travel.

****Real World Image Quality ****

I reviewed the MTF charts for the 18-300, 18-200, 70-300 and 28-300 before ordering the lens (see last section below). I've found that real world testing bears out the MTF charts. Here are my observations at comparable wide, middle and long focal lengths of these lenses taken with a D7000 on a tripod with the mirror up.

18-300 versus 18-200

---At 18mm and 28mm focal lengtha

------18-300 sharper in center

------18-200 sharper in corners

------

---At 70mm, 105mm and 200mm

------18-300 sharper in center and corners

------18-300 looks to have better bokeh

18-300 versus 70-300

---At 70mm focal length

------18-300 better center sharpness

------70-300 better corner sharpness

---At 105 focal length

------18-300 better center sharpness

------Same in corners

---At 200mm and 300mm focal lengths

------18-300 better center and corner sharpness

18-300 versus 28-300

---At 28mm focal length

------18-300 better center sharpness

------28-300 better corner sharpness

---At 70mm focal length

------18-300 better center and corner sharpness

---At 105mm and 200mm focal length

------18-300 better center sharpness

------28-300 better corner sharpness

---At 300mm focal length

------18-300 better center and corner sharpness

Note that there is more focus breathing with a lens like the 18-300, 18-200 or 28-300 than there is with the 70-300. This means if you're standing 5 feet away from a subject and you zoom to 300mm, your subject will appear smaller in the viewfinder with the 18-300 than it will with the 70-300. All the wide range zooms do this to keep the size of the lens as small as possible. At anything from about 60 feet to infinity, you will get the same size on both lenses. The difference in apparent subject size will increase between 60 feet (no difference) to 5 feet (70-300's minimum focus distance). If you can move closer to your subject, you will be able to get the same or bigger size picture of your subject with the 18-300, as the maximum reproduction ratio of the 18-300 is .32x versus .25x for the 70-300.

**** Laboratory Image Quality MTF Charts ****

The comparative MTF charts are posted as a Customer Image next to the image at the top of this page (note I have blacked out everything to the right of 14 mm on the 70-300 and 28-300 charts, as the DX sensor will crop that).

Notes for those unfamiliar with MTF charts:

Vertical axis = % of contrast achieved (perfect lens would be 100%)

Horizontal axis = Distance from center of image in mm (14 mm is corner of picture on DX)

Performance of FX lens over 14mm n/a, since not relevant for DX sensor size

Red lines (S10 & M10) = Contrast of the lens

Blue lines (S30 & M30) = Sharpness of the lens

S= Sagital M = Meridonial the closer these two are to each other the more pleasing the bokeh

After reading a number of good and fairly good reviews, I decided to pick one of these up to replace my older Yamaha receiver. My other one had served me very well but it was time to move up to HDMI.

My criteria for a new receiver were the following:

Ability to take all my input devices: PS3, XBOX360, XBOX, DVD Player

One HDMI connection to the TV to avoid having to change TV's input back/forth

At least a 5.1 system, with ability to go up to 7.1

Ability to watch the inputs with the Receiver on or off

Since my older Yamaha receiver had it, the ability to tune the speakers automatically

Reading the reviews, there were some comments about Yamaha having cut out the support for pre-out. As long as I was concerned, this receiver still has a "pre-out" for the sub-woofer and any other pre-outs aren't necessary. Pre-outs aren't needed for somebody who wants more than the basic home theater systems offer but is not an audiophiliac.

This receiver is great for all I wanted.

6 HDMI inputs for all my devices

Ability to pass through the HDMI even when the unit is in standby. This is off by default and has to be turned on

Ability to upscale Component input to HDMI so the old Xbox can be connected

Comes with a Yamaha microphone for setting up the speakers automatically. This is a nice feature since it tunes the output to speakers to adjust for audio level, delay, etc

It supports 7.1, but isn't really needed. As far as I can tell, all my xbox360 and ps3 games are 5.1.

This receiver also supports either a second zone, or "presence" speakers. Neither of which I care about .

Couple of nice surprises after hooking up the receiver.

After hooking it up to my home network with an Ethernet wire it detected that there's new firmware available. Downloaded and upgraded itself in 15 minutes! No fooling around with finding it, copying to USB, etc, etc

My Vista/Win7 machine detected the receiver and asked me if I want to share my media with the Yamaha receiver. If you have audio files on a windows machine, this receiver can play them without any crazy configuration

Anyways, from opening the box and unwrapping the receiver, remote, etc to having a full setup: 30 minutes.

Run an hdmi cable to the TV

Run an hdmi cable to each of the devices

Run a component cable (with optical for audio in my case) to the old Xbox

Connect an Ethernet cable

Connect the speaker wires

Plug everything in

Done

I got this as a replacement for my old LBT ZX99, and I gotta admit, they have made the best even better! The key points to note are -

This unit is *huge* and HEAVY. You need serious space to keep it. There is nothing "mini" about it. Check the dimensions and weight before you order.

It will literally, not figuratively but literally, shake your house. I was watching Thor with the HD output going to this unit, and at one point my wall hangings started falling off, and I was not using too high bass and was no where near top volume!

The connectivity is perfect. My biggest qualm with the ZX99 was that it had to wired with co-ax the old fashioned. Not for this one! With NFC and bluetooth, it pairs with any phone and Smart TV that you may ever bother to get in the foreseeable future.

The sound quality is on par with the old Sony Muteki series, and it is even louder if you really crank up all the way. What's most important though, is that all that cranking wont't cost you in sound quality. So that is high quality super loud music for a small party hall if need be.

Only note of caution: don;t get it if you live in an apartment. Your neighbors will go MAD!!!

Buy it. Worth every dime.

I LOVE watching movies, and used to use a 61" Flat Screen until we got a trembler and the TV fell over and smashed into 1000 pieces. I am not a rich man, so I can't just afford to go out and pick up a new TV every time we have a quake. What got me was the low price of this projector, and the excellent resolution and contrast that it provides. All my favorites, like 007, are sharp and clear, with full vivid color. I can hook up my digital box to it for regular TV viewing, too. What a great substitute for my TV.

I have been a mobile dj for years and you must always be aware of what to do to prevent someone from suing you in regards to safety with your equipment. This is the perfect solution for stabilizing speaker stand legs. These bags are extremely high quality and have shown no signs of wear after repeated usage outside in windy conditions and inside where they are virtually child proof. They are easy to transport and store due to their design and the double zippers are definitely a plus !

I originally didn't have high hope with such a low cost Android phone before I made the purchase but I made the purchase to give it a try anyway. The phone turned out to be very smooth given the very "common" / "basic" specs of 1Ghz single-core processor and 512 RAM size. I don't know how Sony did it but it is VERY responsive, video is very smooth & load very fast, and audio is beyond awesome & way better than my expectation. (*I am comparing with ATRIX 4G with dual core processor and HTC Thunderbolt).

Not only the back speaker volume is very strong, the noise cancellation works very well when used in regular mode with the mic in the bottom of the phone, the other end can hear very clean (static free)and loud voice probably even better than from a landline phone. This is the phone I will use among others* when I have to make a call in a very noisy environment.

Well .. the best thing is that there is **NO CARRIER RESTRICTIONS on this phone, you are free to enjoy all the full benefit of a Google Android phone beyond what you can enjoy even from the latest Google Nexus from Verizon (the "shaky" LTE version) in terms of restriction free. (I seriously don't care about Face Unlock or NFC Google Wallet, & 5MP camera? you gotta be kidding me! ...etc).

Now, here are the weakness why it doesn't get 5 stars from me:

1. Somewhat small size & average resolution screen tho the Bravia engine does it's magic (you can see the difference by turning it on/off).

2. Disappointing camera, very noisy in low light and low resolution (5MP).

*Note 1: Yes, I actively use all these three phone in daily basis, iPhone is struck out long time ago and I will never look back until probably iPhone5, 6, 7, ... or 100. iPhone X is always one step behind in technical specs anyway.

**Note 2: No, I am not talking about the SIM Free feature. The greatness is way beyond it, the same experience as using an Android phone overseas where Wireless Carriers are not as corrupted and greedy as those here in the Great nation of Capitalism. Hint: You will have to pay $30 a month to enjoy a mere 4GB of LTE data on Verizon network (with their so called "promotion", What The ....!?)

As usual another great Sony Sound Bar; Excellent value for the price; Loaded with technology to handle all the latest multichannel audio technologies Dolby, DD+, DDTrue HD, DTS etc. and 3D pass-through.

After reading the mixed reviews I was a bit nervous about installing this sound bar. However, now that I have it connected and configured correctly with my new 3D TV, I couldn't be happier. I found I can crank-up the volume on the sound bar and experience deep sub-woofer bass to very respectable levels aka, really loud and punchy with the ability to hear all the intended sound-track goodies.

Pros:

Really big sound with deep sub-woofer punch not bad at "simulating" surround-sound affects)

Quick & easy setup. As already mentioned below it truly takes longer to unpack it than to connect to your TV and blu-ray player

Attractive slim sound-bar design with a wireless sub-woofer (note: SW needs to be placed near an AC outlet--other than that you can move the S/W around the room as you like)

Handles all the latest multichannel audio technologies that come with your blu-ray disks to include all the different Dolby Digital and DTS audio signals

Three HDMI ports and one HDMI out; so you can easliy pass all your equipment through the Receiver, includes and optical port as well

Cons:

Because it's so easy to setup--I think some may fail to read the manual resulting in a less then optimal configuration and sound effect

I went to two local retail stores to hear this system before I ordered it from Amazon. It sounded horribly weak with no bass in both store demos UNTIL at the last store I asked if we could adjust the AMP menu settings.

If you use something other than high-speed HDMI cables I don't think you can experience all this system has to offer

(I agree with below reviewer comment) Separate Receiver may cause issues for wall mounted TVs

Here's what I found worked for me:

Use newer standard HDMI high-speed cables only--that means newer 1.3 or any 1.4 1.4 includes ARC support HDMI cables not expensive HDMI cables just the new high-speed cables).

Turn off the Linear pulse-code modulation (LPCM) on the Audio Out on your Blu-ray player or game system. Instead select "Bitstream" for Audio Out on the devices you connect to your Sound Bar.

Your satellite, cable, or over-the-air box/signal may not broadcast Dolby Digital or DTS sound tracks some of the time depending upon the program (don't blame this on the sound bar). During these broadcasts you may experience lower quality sound. Use a blu-ray player and blu-ray disk to test this systems sound capabilities)

Take time to understand the AMP menu on the receiver. Read the manual ;-)--this is where the right settings make all the difference between a lousy sound-bar experience and what you expected when you bought this sound-bar.

And finally, Turn Off your TV speakers when you want to use this system. If you leave your TV speakers on and use the sound bar at the same time then you might hear that horrible "thin" hollow sound I heard some complain about

Try these Amp Menu Settings on the receiver decrease the SW or Bass if these settings sound too low/deep for you):

Level: CNT +4, SW +6

Tone: Bass +5 or 6, Treble +3

Audio: Dual Mono: Main/Sub

Other Receiver settings:

DRC: Off

Sound Field: Movie

Note: For really BIG sound--try increasing the master volume +15 on the Receiver (independently) before you sync the TV volume with the Receiver Volume.

I did a lot of research for TV's in this price range. I've bought a few plasmas and LCD's previously, and this TV blows them all away. This is a great price point, size and brand name TV. You can't go wrong really, you will most certainly be satisfied. The 120hz setting on Clear works best, otherwise gives your TV content a weird soap opera look, so either set it to Clear or turn it off. This LCD works great with a PS3 also, and supports 1080p/24hz resolution, so when you watch blurays, the picture is crystal clear. If you experience any input lag when playing games (delay from button press to action on screen), try setting the source name of your PS3 to PC, it seems to fix that issue pretty well.

The sound on this TV is very robust and clear, although when watching blurays I have to turn it up to hear dialogs, which then makes action sequences really loud, but it's not a big deal.

The design of this TV is just awesome. It has the glass bezel and gloss table top, definitely one of the best looking TV's that I've ever seen. The stand also swivels, which is something every TV should have, but usually don't.

The remote works well, and is very sturdy. The onscreen menus are very clear and even provide descriptions to most of the settings so you don't need to try and figure out what certain settings do.

Its a pretty thin and light panel too, so if your mounting it, it should stay pretty flat on the wall.

I've got nothing but positives to say about this set, its worth every penny, and I'm usually very critical about electronics, but I'd recommend this LCD to anyone. It doesn't look that great out of the box, but after a week of playing with the color settings, I think the picture has been perfected.

UPDATE

Here are my picture settings for anyone that needs a little help getting started

Mode: Standard

Backlight: 14

Contrast: 80

Brightness: 40

Sharpness: 20

Color: 51

Tint: G48/R52

Eco Solution: all off

Edge Enhancement: off

Digital Noise Filter: Low (though I'm sure auto is about the same)

MPEG Noise: Low

Color Tone: Normal (some people seem to like the Warm settings)

Auto Motion Plus 120HZ: Off (I didn't really like this feature)

If you have any adjustments to these, let me know

Overall, this is a decent bargain tripod. The legs appear to be aluminum, and most of the rest of the unit is plastic or PVC. It has a quick-release head for attaching your camera but it only comes with one quick-release attachment, which sort of reduces the utility of it, although I'm sure you can buy more somewhere.

The BAD news is that this unit is cheap, light and flimsy. The GOOD news is that it is that it is cheap and light! For the price, I would call it an excellent value, especially for someone who needs to carry it around with them since it is so light weight.

Many ultra-light tripods feature a hook on the bottom of the centerpost that allows you to tie a bag of rocks or dirt or whatever to weigh down the tripod for steadier shooting. Although the picture of this item shows such a hook, my unit did not come with one. Fortunately you can always tie a weight on with string if you need to.

If you have a slightly higher budget I would recommend looking at the various tripods by Sunpak first. And if you can afford them I would also look at Slik brand tripods as well.

I went from a 3rd generation ipod to an ipod touch because I ran out of memory on my old one. This product is excellent. Almost like a smart phone without the cost of owning one.

Display: impressive. Crisp and bright.

Internet: connects to wifi. I can go online at work, at home, in hotspots, no problem.

Movies: Great. Excellent quality because of the retina display. Almost better than watching on my laptop. Tells you which episodes you've watched and which ones you've watched only parts of. Starts playback where you left off.

Apps/Games: Wide selection of free games and apps. Watch stuff on Netflix (if you already have an account), use Safari to browse the web, play free games, download moviefone to save your favorite theaters and check showtimes, etc. Very useful and entertaining. They also have a really convenient way to link all of your e-mail accounts. They are updated automatically and when you have new mail the ipod prompts you. USE IM+ to chat. Messages show up over whatever else you're doing.

iBooks: Read books online. Hand-held readers aren't my thing, but it's a nice feature.

Photos: Cameras are ok. Front camera better than back camera but convenient. Didn't buy this thing expecting it would be an SLR.

Battery: lasts approximately 4 hours if you use it heavily, with the screen on full brightness, switching between apps and/or watching a tv show or movie. Drains faster if you play games. If you're just listening to music, lasts longer.

Memory: I have 30gb of music. The 64gb was a good decision, I think. Will probably last me a good 5 or more years. Apps and photos take up negligible space. Movies take up more but I delete things after I watch them.

Speaker: very good. If you want to play your music or watch your video without headphones, the sound quality is pretty loud and decent.

As for the packaging, I don't know what all these other reviews are about. Ipod arrived brand new, packaged tightly.

Overall, I'm extremely happy with this product. It crashes very infrequently. I notice it crashes more when I'm using apps that have bugs in them. Otherwise, works beautifully. Would recommend this product to anybody.

I've been weighing the mirrorless option heavy and finally made the plunge to keep it in the Canon family. I Received this camera and have been playing with it and enjoying it for it's purpose. Let me state this, I own a Canon 5D Mark III as well, so I can only speak on my intentions and reasoning for wanting the Eos-M. I had no intentions of buying this camera as a back up body, nor would this be the camera I would recommend for others who are in the market for one. However, image quality wise, it could be. If you've made the Canon investment in gear, and could use something a little more light weight, sort of pocket friendly, and portable that has the capability to be used with your other canon gear.. It's a no brainer. This camera to me is the Hobbyist/enthusiast Canon gear owners good, to best friend.

The Good: I love the image quality, size, and build quality of the camera and even the 22mm itself is a much better build then expected. It doesn't feel cheap. The touchscreen is pretty good and responsive, if you don't mind a few prints on the screen trying to assist the focusing. Also I love the relief of not carrying my battery gripped 5D around with me for all of the smallest things, and missing something worth capturing because of it. This camera has been a blast, and I've worn it around my neck on several occasions and even the people with me haven't noticed.

The Bad: Slow maneuvering around the menus, as there are limited physical buttons and no turn dial (But this may get faster as you get use to the touchscreen). No built in flash (When this camera is said to target those coming from point and shoot cameras), No view finder (But after a couple of shots.. I wasn't missing it), And no direct lens mount Ef-s or EF (and mainly this is because of the outrageous price for the adapter). But all of this is tolerable... Sort of. I wont complain about the auto focus speed as to me, it's really not that bad. I have seen faster, and even faster focus speeds on this camera alone. But then again, I use a 85mm 1.2L quite a bit on my Mark III and that lens can almost make any focus speed seem fast.

I did purchased the 16GB Eye-Fi card and use it to transfer images straight to my cellphone for quick editing if needed, and uploading to any social network services I use. I have no idea why it did not cross someones mind at Canon, to include wifi and/or Gps, when I've have heard time and time again about one of the excuses for not having a built in EVF was that this camera should attract those who are familiar with taking cellphone images.

In the end, a built in Viewfinder, wifi, gps, flash and a cheaper if not free lens adapter would have been nice. But even so, I am happy with my purchase, and I've read enough to understand its purpose or my reasoning for wanting one, and have actually been more impressed then what I've originally expected. I do not think anyone would be in their right mind to purchase this camera for sports photography, and if you've taking pictures with almost any modern smart phone today, the focus speed may never be a issue to you. If you already own or are familiar with a Canon DSLR, this camera will feel right at home with the options and setup. And if this is a new world to you, you might want to read the manual, or watch a video to get yourself familiar first. Great buy for me!!!

**UPDATE** 7-3-13

I Still love this camera just as much as the day I got it, and has been a very solid performer overall. The biggest gripe about the camera from others was the auto focus speed in which has recently been corrected via v2.0.. And for me was the sun glare on the screen was a slight disadvantage while using the camera outside, (which could be fixed if the camera had a view finder), but I just added a non glare screen protector, and raised my LCD brightness to fix and works great for me.

From my personal experiences that I've had since owning this camera, the slight auto focus problem has not made me feel any less different about it, as it was not that bad.The consistent color contrast, color balance and image quality has never been better, and have shocked me on many occasions. This camera is a very capable and solid performer for what my intentions were, and quite a few people have purchased it after seeing a few uses, and images i've taken with it. Now with the update, there is no denying how good and fun this little camera is, and have definitely increased my personal uses and longevity with this camera.

Thanks Canon, the overall build, and image quality is nothing short of awesome. I can't wait to see how they will out do themselves with the next Eos-M camera.

It's a beautiful monitor

As for the recorder not so great with my 5dmkiii

From my usage with the H2S converter the footage was actually better from the 5d.

Also the hdmi signal out of any camera is interlaced so this is technically an interlaced signal trying to be changed to progressive. But when you move the camera in any sort of abrupt move you will see the fake progressiveness shine... Also you are not going to get a 422 out of a 420 signal. No matter what anyone may tell you.

I returned mine. But the monitor was phenomenal and with the wave form and peaking made that much harder to return. Buy when the cost of all the parts added up to 1700. Not that hard to part with.. If you have a sdi cam and want a nice monitor then this may be for you but if you have hdmi then pass it by.

Did a lot of research before buying this TV. I have always owned LED/LCD TVs in the past and to be perfectly honest I was a Plasma hater and never thought I would own one. I originally was going to get theSamsung UN60ES8000 60-Inch 1080p 240 Hz 3D Slim LED HDTV (Silver). I along with a lot of others thought plasma was a step down. Boy was I wrong! This TV has the most amazing picture I have seen, and that right out of the box. I haven't even adjusted any settings yet. Some key things I was worried about when buying a plasma was that they always seemed so much darker than the LEDs, I believe it might be the was the stores display them because the TV in the store display was playing the Dark Night and it seemed very hard to see. However once I had them put in a different DVD the TV seemed extremely bright. I owned a 55 inch SAmsung LED prior and now seeing them side by side I can tell what I have been missing. First the colors are extremely clear and accurate, I noticed how washed out an LED TV picture is now. Also the motion blur I got from any fast moving things is not a factor on this plasma as it was on my last TV. If your a fan of 3D the 3D on this TV is great. No crosstalk like early 3D models. I was also concerned about the glare, I have a sliding glass door in the room I have the TV as well as a bay window directly behind. Sure there is a little glare from the window but no more than I had with my LED, its just something that you have to deal with on any TV. This TV also has no issues viewing in the day time with the entire room lit up.

Now for the Cons... the Smart TV features aren't quite as smart as they think they are. The voice control works surprisingly well unless you have the TV up loud then it has a difficult time hearing your voice. You can press a button on the remote and talk into the remote(there is a microphone on it) which will work but if you have the remote in your hand already why not just push the button. I guess this is good for web browsing and being able to speak any text. The motion control on the other hand doesn't work so hot, I actually haven't even got it to understand I am waving at it and trying to use it. It seems to only attempt to work when the room is very bright. Voice good. Motion not so good.

The only other Con which I guess is pretty common with a Plasma but new to me as this is my first is the buzzing the TV makes. I am sure I will get used to it and I don't hear it when the TV volume is up, but if there is a show on and there is a quiet part of the show I can hear the buzz. Not so loud that I can't ignore and live with it though.

So my overall opinion of this TV is I love the thing. You drop this kind of money on a TV it has a lot to live up to and its very easy to get buyers remorse. I am so happy I made the choice to buy this set.

I have only had the TV for a day so If I think of anything more I update my review. Ask any questions and ill do my best to answer.

This item was suggested by a salesman at a very reputable electronics store. We didn't buy it on-site because they only had the orange color in stock so we ordered from Amazon where we got the color we wanted and a better price. This is absolutely perfect for those who don't want to carry around a larger camcorder and all of the chargers/attachments that come along with it. This fits nicely in my pocket of my husband's jeans or in my purse. We prefer the smaller size so that we can bring along and not feel like stalkers. The videos are of great quality and we were very happy with the purchase.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I've purchased a lot of different hard drives over the years and used to build my own external drives using internal drives and external enclosures. It used to be cheaper to build your own external drives. These days, external hard drives are very competitively priced, like the Seagate Expansion drive.

PROS:

Quiet

Stays cool

Fast USB 3.0 performance

Backwards compatible with USB 2.0

Works with Mac OS X 10.4.8 and up

CONS:

Measly 1 year warranty

DESIGN & BUILD

The Seagate Expansion portable hard drive's enclosure is made out of matte plastic that feels pretty well made, though I'd prefer aluminum for durability and better heat dissipation. Glossy plastic enclosures are hard to keep looking good, so kudos to Seagate for using the matte plastic instead. The back of the drive has the USB 3.0 port and there's an itty bitty blue power/activity light on top of the drive, towards the back. Also, there are small rubber feet on the bottom, to keep the drive from sliding around on your desk. The USB 3.0 cable is short, so it's best suited for use with laptops.

PERFORMANCE

CrystalDiskInfo identified the internal drive as a Seagate Momentus Thin ST500LT012, which is a SATA II (3Gb/s) drive with a 16MB cache. It has a height of 7mm and runs at 5400RPM. 5400 RPM drives are the standard for portable external hard drives because they don't run as hot as 7200 RPM drives. 5400 RPM drives are perfectly suitable as storage drives.

I tested the Seagate Expansion drive over USB 3.0 with CrystalDiskMark and got sequential read/write rates of 107MB/s read and 105MB/s write. That's likely about 3 times the rate of what you'd get over USB 2.0. So yes, the Seagate Expansion USB 3.0 drive is great for transferring large multimedia files, like photos, movies, and music. Of course, there are plenty of other USB 3.0 drives with similar performance.

MISCELLANEOUS

The formatted capacity of the 500 GB drive is 465 GB. On the drive, there's a small registration utility for Windows that's safe to delete after you register. I deleted the utility, but kept the autorun.inf and SeagateExpansion.ico files so the drive would show up with a Seagate icon in Windows Explorer.

Online, the bare 500GB drive can be bought for around $65-$75, so the external version is a decent value if you like the enclosure and internal drive.

Though the Amazon product description doesn't mention compatibility with Mac OS X, Seagate's website shows compatibility with OS 10.4.8 and higher. It comes pre-formatted in NTFS, however, so you'll need to reformat it if you intend to use it with a Mac.

The Seagate Expansion portable hard drive comes with a measly one year warranty. The Western Digital My Passport 500 GB USB 3.0 portable hard drive costs nearly the same as the Seagate Expansion drive, but comes with backup software, has hardware encryption, and a two year warranty. For a little bit more, you can even get Seagate's own Backup Plus 500 GB USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive , with a two year warranty. As far which company makes better hard drives, well, that's hard to say. I've used drives from both companies for many years and I've had drives from both companies fail. In fact, it's not unusual for hard drives to fail over time, which is why the length of the warranty can be a significant factor in deciding which drive to buy.

CONCLUSION

The Seagate Expansion portable hard drive is a very nice drive. It performs very well and is a pretty good value overall, however, the short warranty is a concern. I like the drive a lot, but I'd personally look for a portable hard drive with a longer warranty.
