Motorola DROID MINI (Verizon Wireless)

Motorola DROID MINI
Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars

I upgraded from a Droid RAZR that I owned for 2 years and I have no regrets. In fact, I am blown away by how smooth and responsive is the new Droid Mini, in addition to the display quality. Even though it is not a 1080 display, at 4.3 inches, the 720 resolution of the TFT LCD display on the Droid Mini gives it 342 pixels per inch (ppi). It has more ppi than its bigger brothers (the MAXX and Ultra) and even the iPhone 5! What this mean is that the display is very detailed and sharp. Even though the contrast may not be as good as an OLED or IPS display, the white balance is more accurate (instead of the yellowish tint typical of Pentile OLED)

Compared to the other "mini" phones on the market (i.e. HTC One Mini), this has the best overall processing capability and the largest RAM. The 2 GB RAM keeps the device snappy even when there are multiple apps running in the background. Even though it only has a 1.7 GHz dual-core processor, it's the fastest one out there (for now). In addition, the quad-core graphics processor allows it to keep up with higher-end flagship phones when running cutting edge games.

There are some cool features that are unique to the new Droids and Moto X: Active Notifications, Touchless Controls, and Quick Capture. Amazon has since included information about these features in the product description, so I'll provide supplemental details:

-Active Notifications: it works with any app that has push-notifications such as Facebook Messenger.

-Touchless Controls: If the phone is secured with face unlock, pattern unlock, PIN, or password, you will need to provide the necessary validation in order for Google Now to respond to you. So to keep it "Touchless," the screen lock setting needs to be set to "None" or "Slide". Supposedly the phone will only respond to my voice, but my co-worker was able to activate Touchless Controls after the third attempt.

-Quick Capture: I recommend the following camera settings to be "On", Quick Capture, HDR, and Tap to Focus.

All the above features are always on, which could significantly drain the battery if handled by the dual-core processor. To address this problem, Motorola designed two low-powered chips to process these new features. As a result, this phone can last a day under normal use. For me, the Droid Mini lasts about 16 hours under moderate use.

Since the phone is provided through Verizon and not directly from Google like the Moto X, there will be bloatware. Thankfully, you can disable the bloatware through the app settings menu, something I couldn't do on the Droid RAZR. There is one app that I actually find to be interesting and useful is Droid Zap. This app allows you to share pictures and videos with people around you (within 1,000 feet) by swiping up on a picture with two fingers. The recipients then open the Droid Zap app (free and only for Android devices) on their phones and two finger swipe down to download the shared picture (or video).

There are a couple things I don't like about my new Droid Mini, but they can be easily addressed. My first complaint is the construction. The Droid RAZR has an aluminum frame that gave it a solid feel, the Droid Mini does not. Also, the Kevlar back is now coated with a clear shiny resin. This causes the back of the phone to be covered in finger grease, to a point where I can't even see the Kevlar pattern! So I promptly got a case to cover up that ugliness and to give it better drop protection. Here is the link to the particular case I bought: Incipio MT-269 DualPro Dual Case for Motorola Droid Mini XT1030 White/Grey Retail Packing

My second complaint is that it does not have a micro SD slot. For some people, this would be a deal breaker. But thankfully, SanDisk has a wireless USB thumb drive that stores its content on micro SD cards. This is something I'll be getting to expand my Droid Mini's storage capability. Here is the link for those who are interested: SanDisk Connect 16GB Wireless Flash Drive (SDWS2-016G-E57)

Oh, and another thing I'll be getting is a Qi wireless charger, since this phone has a built-in wireless charger receiver. I'll update my review to let you know how well that works.

**UPDATE: 9/10/13**

The Qi Wireless Charger came in and it worked like a charm. It even charged my phone through its protective case. The Droid Mini had a neat on-screen prompt that helped me place the phone properly on the charger. However, it makes an loud notification sound (which I can't control) upon successful connection. This sound will definitely startle your significant other if the phone is placed on the charger in the middle of the night, so I'll be using this charger at work and not at home. Here is the link to the particular charger I bought: GMYLE (TM) Black White Wireless Mini Charging Pad Mat Qi-enabled Standard Charger (1000mA) for Nokia Lumia 920/920T/925/928/1020, LG Google Nexus 4/5/7 HD, Samsung Galaxy S4, iPhone 5 (US Plug)

I purchased this lens to take on vacation so I did a trial run on the weekend. I was pleased with my results. I did find it a little hard to switch between the telephoto and the macro settings. When using macro I found I needed to pull away from my subject to have the camera readjust so I could switch back to standard telephoto. A little time consuming but nothing that I can't live with. It is surprisingly light weight but does need to be supported to minimize camera shake. The price was great as it included the UV, Florescent, and polarizing filters in a nice pleather case, as well as a cleaning kit

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I had purchased a similar unit but previous model with 80 lumens and returned it after testing it, the brightness was just not enough. At 100 lumens (55 when using battery power) it makes this mini projector fun to use. I plugged in my iPad via HDMI and the quality was good. It's not the best projector in terms of brightness (the Aaxa KP-600-01 has 300 lumens) but it's great for a kids room, camping or even traveling.

The speaker is a joke so don't rely on that, instead use headphones or a portable speaker that can plug directly into the projector. Comes with a carrying case and accessories but no iPhone/iPad cable which is optional. Don't buy it and instead buy an mini HDMI cable to HDMI and the Apple adapter for AV out with HDMI.

I purchased this to replace the original 500GB disk in my MacBook Pro.

Fairly simple process to replace, if you have the right cable.

In this case, I purchased an exteral USB-SATA cable, and used the standard process of creating a new boot volume on the new disk, and then did a copy/clone of the internal disk to the new disk.

Once the disk copy is completed, eject the new disk, shut down the laptop, remove the screws to open the case, 2 screws to remove the drive, unplug the SATA connector, swap the 4 screws from the old to new disk, plug it back in, button up the case and boot.

Done. Simple process. Seems to work fine.

This is a 5400RPM disk, the old 500GB disk I had was a 7200RPM. There is a noticable difference in speed when copying a lot of sequential files. For "normal" use, opening apps, saving files, etc, no speed difference.

First, my motivation for taking the time to write a review is that these Amazon product reviews have helped me so much in the past that I wanted to pay some of that back.

More to the point, Yes, definitely buy this Yamaha Sound Bar if your needs are similar to mine.

I love this thing because my new 46Inch LED Flat Screen had a great picture but really dull sound and I wanted to add better sound without a complicated set of gear, and this Yamaha Sound Bar immediately gave me bright clear quality sound in a simple one piece component that looks high end and fits nicely in front of my TV. You don't notice it.

I gave it a full five stars because it worked great right out of the box, exceeded my expectations and I really got it set up within in 20 minutes, really.

When I turned it on I sat there with a big smile on my face because of the quality sound as I channel surfed and played with the sound settings, how many times does that happen with a new piece of gear?

Only two wires to deal with, the power cord to plug in and it came with the other one, an optical cable, so no running out to figure out what cable or cables to buy. You just plug in the optical cable to the audio out on the TV and into the back of the Yamaha.

When you slide it out of the box, be careful grabbing it, as along the bottom of the unit two of the internal speaker compartments are cloth covered and you could accidentally poke your fingers through before you get it fully out of the box, unwrapped and can see them.

Even though it sits in front of the base of my TV; it didn't block my TV remote's signals, as it has a setting to pass through and relay your remotes signal out of its back side. You can teach this Yamaha Sound Bar to respond to your TV's remote to turn the Yamaha on and off and adjust the volume, I haven't done that yet.

The Voice Clear feature is worth it alone, no matter if my home's noisy A/C is on or if there is a lot of back ground noise in what I am watching; it makes dialog jump out to be clear and understandable. Now I can now walk out of the room and not miss what's being said on the TV Show.

Also what I truly enjoy is that it automatically keeps the volume from increasing when the commercials come on.

The Surround Sound feature is excellent and full sounding; it makes you feel like the characters and action are in the room with you. The Stereo setting is also is excellent, music on it sounds great with depth and warmth like on my high end audio car system.

Remote is simple, settings and set up easy to use and the manual covered it all briefly but with enough to be user friendly for a normal person.

I feel like I got good value for what I paid.

NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED:

I've watched the issue with these drives carefully for about 2 months. It looks like Seagate solved the problem and that a vocal few were ever really affected. By few I mean relative to the thousands sold. And I am not defending Seagate. This whole fiasco was unacceptable.

MY SYSTEM:

I picked up 8 of these drives. I'm running them in 4 separate DLink DNS-321 RAID boxes. I've copied about 4TB of data back and forth across them for days. My only firmware update needed was for the DLink so that it could properly handle the new 1.5TB drives.

In the end I believe all is well with both the drives and the DLink DNS-321. I will of course update this review immediately if I see any problems.

PERFORMANCE:

We are able to watch movies from this drive arrangement on 3 computers simultaneously across a 100mb network from the same drive while adding new files to the drive from a 4th computer.

This means I can be adding movies unattended to the system while watching an Epic Man movie on the plasma in the living room... while the kids are watching Monsters Inc in the bedroom... and the wife is off watching some chic flick in the Den. :)

The combination of DLink and these 1.5TB drives is fantastic and seems as stable as the WD 1TBs I was using previously.

PROPER DIAGNOSIS:

Don't confuse your drive DIEING after a week with the previous firmware problems of this particular drive. Blame the vendor that shipped the drive like it could bounce !

ON A SIDE NOTE:

I will say I am sick of Amazon, Tiger and other vendors shipping hard drives like they are indestructible ROCKS. Even if they arrive working, this inadequate packaging is certainly taking years off the life of our drives. One of my 8 arrived DEAD as a brick thanks to this nonsense. I am furious about this issue !

Will it take a class action to stop this behavior of guaranteeing future drive sales by damaging todays drives through deliberate mishandling of our purchases ?! Wake up AMAZON ! Wake up TIGER !

UPDATE: Dec 14 2009

One year later, I own 22 of these drives now. 12 are running daily in DNS-321 Raid boxes. The other 10 are used as back up drives in a drop in SATA adapter. No failures since 2 in the first few weeks, I believe due to poor packaging. About 6 of my drives came with the BAD firmware. I never had issues with that either. Call me blessed. I just think the DNS-321 and these drives work very well together.

UPDATE: Jan 8 2011

Another year passes and most of my 1.5TBs have all been pulled from DNS-321 RAID boxes and used as loose backup drives in a drop in SATA adapter. I've replaced them with the larger Seagate 2TB drives for larger capacity. NO FAILURES OF EITHER DRIVE 1.5TB or 2TB ! I have a couple Hitachi's and WD 2TBs. The Seagate drives are quieter and come off sleep in my RAID boxes faster than the other brands. All are used for video streaming over a network and do a fantastic job.

TIGER has been shipping drives MUCH BETTER. Amazon packagers have sent me drives packed poorly just 2 months ago. I requested replacements and Amazon handled the no charge exchange well. But they should NOT have been shipped that way.

I purchased this product to replace an ADCOM GTP-500II/GFA-555 pre/amp combo. My housekeeper moved one of my B&W speakers and shorted one of the channels on the GFA-555. The repair would be over $300, so I decided to downsize a bit and go for a modern integrated amp.

First, the bad: I cannot understand why the gorgeous silver version of this unit is not available to US customers. It is a knockout! That being said, the stenciled markings on the faceplate are difficult to read on my black unit, and there is no LED indicator on the volume knob! Also, there is no way to select the inputs directly via the faceplate or the remote you need to press the input button on the remote or twist the input knob on the faceplate repeatedly until you get to the desired input.

Now, the good: The build quality is excellent. The aluminum faceplate and volume knob look great and feel good to the touch. The ergonomics are just about perfect, with the controls very easy to use. The amplifier section sounds crisp (almost thin), with plenty of top end sparkle. Bass is clean and driving at all volume levels. There is no compression as the volume knob is turned past the 12:00 o'clock position as I have heard in many (even high-end) receivers and integrated.

The built-in DAC is very good sounding and very convenient for connecting a TV and other digital sources. It is not warm by any extent, but neither is it harsh. Still, I preferred the sound of my Sony SACD player using the analog inputs over the amp's DAC. Sound is fantastic when connecting a PC's SPD/IF output to the amp's DAC. Definitely and improvement over using the sound card's analog outputs.

The only real disappointment is the phono stage. With my Luxman turntable and Audio Technica ML440 cart the sound is thin and the level is quite low. The dynamics that I once heard with my ADCOM pre's phono stage are gone. I can hear a lot more surface noise now. I will surely be investing in an outboard phono stage and bypassing the Onkyo's.

Promote Systems Promote Control, Remote Control for Digital SLR Cameras

From my own personal researching efforts, I think this is the only option Canon shooters have for programming Canon cameras to shoot greater than three exposures. The Promote does the job. I can configure the remote to fire off 20+ exposures on my Canon 5D Mark II. This is a huge plus for those wanting to do HDR photography. Not having to touch the camera (potential for moving the camera) during multiple exposures is a wonderful thing.

As for the actual remote, I expected a higher build quality for a $300 remote. The remote has an extreme plastic-y feeling to it and some might suggest that it has a fake knock-off feel to it. However, let me repeat myself, this camera does do what it claims to do. Also, given my propensity to over pack my camera gear and comparing it to the Canon TC-80N3, I found the Promote remote to be unnecessarily large. The Canon TC-80N3 provides a fair amount of functionality at 1/3 the size. But the Canon TC-80N3 doesn't do what the Promote can. And I understand and recognize that.

If you shoot a Canon 5D Mark II, you have to attach two separate wires/cords from the camera to the remote to get full functionality. This is a work flow killer in my opinion. Shooting in portrait mode with a L bracket on a ballhead does provide some challenges when you have to budget for two cords.

Also, if any of your "bracketed" exposures go beyond 30 seconds, there are additional programing steps involved. The shooter needs to switch to a "bulb" exposure. And you need to upgrade the firmware to enable 30+ seconds exposures.

And to conclude, the following comment is based on my experiences on shooting raw files with the Promote. To take 7+ shots with progressively long shutter times, a lot of the camera custom features (i.e. noise reduction) may need to be adjusted or turned off. If the camera needs to take more than a few moments to process the file (raw files from a 5DII are pretty darn big 25mg+), the Promote errors out. The remote, from what I can tell, doesn't adjust for the camera's need to process the image. The remote follows a strict timing sequence. If the camera needs more than what the Promote remote feels is a typical/adequate processing time, the bracketing sequence stops.

All these things are necessarily deal killers but I thought cyberspace would like to know. It took me a bit of time to figure all of this out. If you should buy one, please don't buy this product the day before a major shooting trip. These is a significant learning curve involved with this product. Oh, and the instruction manual is pretty sparse.

**********Update/Effective 8/01/11

I've owned this thing for a year now and I've really gotten the hang of it. I haven't gotten any "timed-out" issues anymore. Learning curve was steep on this one and I consider myself pretty good around electronics.

Here is my work flow for HDR photo taking on a Canon 5D Mark II(assuming camera is on a tripod). These steps are contrary to some of the written instructions for the Promote. Try it out, see if it works for you...

1. Insert plugs into both Promote and Camera

2. Power on Promote (Promote on before camera is vital in my experience.)

3. Power on Camera (Wait approx 20 seconds you won't be able to do much while the camera is syncing up with the Promote. You'll get a "Busy" comment if you try and do an exposure too soon.)

4. In Av mode, in Evaluative Mode/Matrix Metering Mode, dial in your Apeture (f/18 etc...), press the shutter button half way and see what the camera spits out for the shutter speed.

5. In the HDR mode on the Promote, dial in the Shutter speed you got from step 4, how many EV steps, and total amount of exposures.

6. Pop the camera in Manual mode, set the same Apeture you did in step 4 and fire off the Promote. There is no need to manually set the shutter speed here. The Promote will override whatever the last shutter speed setting may have been.

7. If exposure times exceed 30 seconds, the Promote will request that you reset the camera into Blub mode.

This is my work flow for the Promote. Just offering my own humble observations. Thanks. Good luck.

Arrived just in time for sons last flag football game and is taking great shots! First DSLR camera had an SLR years ago and loved it so it was good to get back into it with this one. Couldnt be happier with the quality of the unit and it was pretty easy to get going with some basic picture taking. It does take some time to get accustomed to some of the features and whatnot the camera offers we have just skimmed the surface. Be ready to read and play with it some to start then play and read more to really get going well worth the pics you get though...

Quality of the unit is top notch did some comparisons was going to go with a Nikon D7000 but decided to save some cash this camera gives you pretty high quality in the product itself and the pics it takes for the price. My borther-in-law has the D7000 and it is a nice camera but I couldn't justify twice the money for our purposes....

So far planning on some add-ons such as a flash for bounce flash photography and macro lenses for close ups and other things we want to get into.....price of those add-ons was better than what Nikons prices were overall not a whole lot but for a family of five we watch our pennies....

I was very reluctant at first to order this as I had never heard of the seller and read some sketchy reviews. Item shipped almost immediately and I received the tracking info. Granted I had to wait for UPS to sign for the package, but I understand the reasons. Was somewhat leery as the camera was priced more than $200 less than it was at BestBuy or other like retailers, AND came with ALOT of stuff. Was very worried that it would be an out of box refurbished item. Package came as expected as per tracking info. All items are brand new in their original packing. And again, it came with A LOT of stuff!!! Got too tired to unwrap everything and put it away. If you want to buy this camera, BUY IT HERE! Plus with Amex points which I could use through Amazon, ended up paying only $100, when I almost paid $650 at a retailer just for the camera. Looks like it finally pays to be a shopaholic.

Also the service I received from "Light and Motion" support, as I had some queries related to its operation, it was superb and prompt.

Recommendation. Please study very carefully the small manual as it is very informative as regards its operation.

Particular attendance is to setting the "travelling " and "SOS" modes and how to return to the normal operating mode.

Picked up a Leica V-Lux 30 for my wife who wanted to get back into photography. She is doing close up / macro nature pics and this camera WILL focus down to 1cm away from the subject. Incredible. 12.1mb is adequate for our needs and the Leica lens is OUTSTANDING. We have had super-zoom single lens SLR's in the past and then got rid of them because they did everything mediocre, not this camera, it does everything well. The next step up would be a professional multi-thousand dollar camera and for under $1000 this Leica performs right up to the top of the line cameras.

Sigma SD14 14MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)

Sigma SD14 14MP Digital SLR Camera

The SD10 had problems. The battery charge system was just weird. The camera was not up to the hype when light was poor. But the images with good light were stunning. So it was with some angst, sustained by a delayed product release, that I opened my camera SD14. Very early on I knew I had a problem in that the camera hung... motion? But I got off some really spectacular images before sending it to NY repairs. They got it back quickly. I suspect something loose.

Well the images are simply wonderful. Just so you know, I have cameras at 5 & 6 times the price considered high end professional. I can get lots more pixels, but the color quality is not better.

The real test was low light. All the digital cameras fail in low light. So just a matter of how bad. OK, something is new here. This camera is far better in dim light than the SD10. When it starts to fail to low light the images become blotchy like camoflage rather than sandy as the GRGB cameras tend.

The SD14 X3F RAW images do well in Adobe's new Lightroom, and interestingly with the many controls for image modification in that program, there are none that set this camera aside (for punishment for being different).

The SD10 used a 1 GByte card but did not take larger. I tested the SD14 on 1 Gig (mechanical IBM type) and on 2 Gig, and 4 Gig, and 8 Gig CFII cards. Though, beware, some cards do badly with certain cameras across the board. So, I cannot say that ALL CFII's are OK. But I was able to find cards that worked a large range of memory capacity.

The camera saves images as RAW or JPEG. You can select two "color spaces", sRGB or AdobeRGB. I found that odd. Why not a 16 bit option? I suspect that is simply understood for RAW.

The booklet that comes with the camera may be the clearest such booklet of any camera. There were a few minor areas where referring the user to other sources seemed lazy(C1----v C2----v C3----v for camera strobes might be obvious to those who have these but ought to be explained to those who don't and maybe might want to).

Also the SD14 can shoot "tethered" a huge fact that gets barely any mention other than an arrow pointing at the port. Those who do that, know, but maybe some need to learn how?

The camera body is nicely shaped, the controls are very logical, and shooting is easy.

There is something about the color. The SD10 drove me nuts because I had to charge batteries in shifts (they didn't all fit in the charger at once... grrrr). I almost dismissed this camera from that experience alone. The low light limits of the SD10 were also hard to take. But, that color. Seems even better in the SD14. It is not like other cameras. Just isn't. Very pleasing rich deep textural color.

So, down side? Well Sigma is not a magnet for lenses made by other manufacturers. So you will probably be a Sigma all the way person. But the Sigma lenses I used were quite good and cost way way less than other brands. There is a specific flash kind for the flash shoe. So, maybe your current flash might not work? The built-in flash, does what built in flashes do.

The SD14 battery system is quite nice. There is a built-in dust protector to assist lens swaps very nice.

Want to do very high end photography with a wide array of lenses without going broke? Look at this model.

Update 3/6/2012 I own about 20 Transcend cards now. They have all worked without an issue untill today. I dread calling any company for return support because it usually is such a tortured experience...(Ever tried calling SanDisk for product support?) Withing 20 seconds of dialing I was connected to their representative Marc Crawford. He was able to quickly and clearly guide me to the support I needed. It was such a shockingly great experience that I wanted to pass it along to potential purchasers.

UPDATE 9-10 I own 4 of these cards now. I have more of these than any other card I own because they are a very good value for capacity/price/and speed. My initial disappointment over the lack of super high speed is outweighed by the reality that this card is an exceptional value.

If you own a compact digital camera, or SD/HD video camera, this card will exceed the capabilities of all of them. For compact cameras the card isn't usually the slowest part of the data write process, it's the camera.

This card unloads very quickly with a 20MB/s read speed. You will need a SDHC card reader if you don't have one. A standard SD card reader will not read a HC (high capacity) card.

These cards make great gifts. I have given several of the 8 Gig cards as gifts and have received appreciation and great comments from all the recipients.

UPDATED REVIEW:

I purchased this card making the assumption that all class 10 cards had the same read and write speed. This was a poor assumption on my part. In order for a card to qualify for class 10 speed the card needs to be certified to have 10MB/s write and read speed. Some manufacturers classify their cards at a slower speed even though they qualify for a higher class. SanDisk make some cards that would qualify for class 10 and rates them as class 6.

The product photo on Amazon does not have the card's speed printed on it. The card that was shipped shows the front of the card printed with "20MB/s" which is the cards read speed. The cards write speed is 16MB/s.

I own a SanDisk Extreme III class 10 card that has (up to) 30MB/s read and write speed. My Nikon D-90 that can take advantage of the SanDisk cards speed. The difference is the SanDisk card can capture 100 photos at fine resolution in 24 seconds. The Transcend card captures 66 photos in the same time/resolution.

I reality very few people will ever have the need to drill off 100 photos in 24 seconds, but I can't stand to lose a good shot because the camera is slow while writing to the card and I can't fire the shutter. You can hear this happen at about 4.5 seconds in the video review. This does not happen with the SanDisk class 10 30MB/s card.

If you own an SLR that is capable of rapid fire, high-resolution photography you may want to consider the SanDisk Extreme III 30 MB/s card. It is expensive.

This card is reasonably priced for a class 10 card. Just know what you are getting, what your needs may be, and what else is available. I own other Transcend cards and they have always worked properly without any issues.

The video that I attached shows this card with the same 24 seconds that I gave the SanDisk Card.
