I bought the lens in anticipation of the 5/20/2012 solar eclipse and the 6/5/2012 transit of Venus. Having never used anything outside 300 mm, it was a huge jump for me. Once I got the angle of view challenges out of the way, using my hand as a back-stop to align the lens on the sun, pin-hole camera style, then putting on the solar filter on the lens, I got some great solar activity shots in addition to the primary events of each day. One caveat for rookies like me -make sure you have enough tripod for the lens, it is relatively heavy, and my old (circa 1985) tripod was not up to the task. I'll be looking for something more suitable, going forward.
