The Gateway NE56R31u is a compact and powerful machine for the price and definitely a major step up from what I was using before.

I bought the system to replace my old "netbook" computer, which was getting slow, clunky and generally out of shape. For this price range, I don't think I could have made a better choice. This system has excellent technical specifications and even comes with the latest Windows 8 operating system. Windows 8 may take a bit of getting used to at first, but with a little time, you'll quickly figure out how to do most things, and for the most part you can also boss it around to make it work more like the Windows you're familiar with if you know much about computers. The system seems very stable and in the rare event of a crash or anything like that, it recovers quickly.

It has three USB slots and all of the other usual hookups and comes with a built in webcam. The other technical specifications are as follows:

*Processor Intel B830

*Monitor 15.6" 16:9 HD LED LCD with Intel HD Graphics

*4 GB DDR3 Memory

*320 GB HDD

*DVD-Super Multi DL drive (Whatever that means, but it seems to play both DVDs and CDs well and fast, and does burning/ripping too. Note This is *not* a Blu-ray drive, so if this is something that's important to you, you'll need to either find another system or invest in an external Blu-ray drive.)

*802.11b/g/n wireless connection

*6-cell Li-ion battery (The charging and life on this is way better than my old system. It lasts about 4-5 hours at full brightness, and this can easily be extended to about double by dimming the screen, which is great if you like just using it sometimes to listen to music or audiobooks or something like that. Charging it is a breeze only takes about an hour or less.)

One piece of advice try to find a deal on this one if you can. When I bought this, I got away with a total cost of around $350, including tax, so be sure to shop around. It comes with the usual one-year limited warranty, with the option to extend that if you want.

Notable as of the writing of this review, Amazon's listing says that this system comes with Windows 7 Premium. The system I purchased, which has the same specifications otherwise, comes with Windows 8. Therefore, if you want Windows 8 (which seems to me to be a good choice), you might want to check before being.
