This lens is now my favorite lens on my Nikon D5100. The portrait that I take with his lens is just eye popping and knocks the pants out of my stock Nikor 18-70mm lens. It takes good landscape photo as well but it's the eye popping portraits that makes this lens shine. The only issue I have with it is that the auto focus is slow even on bright sunny day.
I have a Nikon 50mm F1.8 lens as well which focuses instantly so I don't know what the beef is with the 35mm. Despite this shortcoming, it's on my camera all the time unless I need zoom. At the end of the day, I want shots that are stunning and compelling and not just more of the run of the mill shots. I've taken more than 20,000 digital photos and have all sorts of lens so I don't need more of the same so this lens really stands out.
