I have a Sony a57 a great mid/entry-level DSLR (technically SLT) and as I've been learning about photography, I realized my first mistake was buying the included kit lens.
In hindsight I should have bought the body and then gotten a great lens like this one!
It's large, with a 72mm opening (for filters), but that also allows for great glass and aperture. A constant f/2.8 is a huge step up from the kit (18-55mm/f/3.5-5.6) in terms of quality and ability to bring in more light.
The bokeh this lens pulls of is smooth and it's more accurate edge-to-edge than the kit (the kit had some serious barrel distortion and chromatic aberration). All of this can be fixed/touched up in Lightroom, but it's better to start with a cleaner, high-quality source.
The "package" that this comes with includes some cheap (practically throwaway) accessories like a cleaning kit, blower, and a memory card holder (this is the CHEAPEST looking). The Sony bag is great (and actually could resell decently) and the tripod seems useful (if you don't have one) and includes a panning handle for video and a quick-release mount.
All in all a great lens and I would have paid the same even without all the extras (none of which I'm using!)
