I need to take a lot of photos outdoors when travelling and have been totally frustrated with the trend to LCD screens on the compacts. They simply do not work in bright sunlight and a view finder is essential. How anyone can compose a picture with a washed out LCD screen in even normal sun conditions is a totally mystery to me.
Always looking for something small, I gave up and went up a notch to the Canon SX40 HS. It is an excellent camera with great range and the telephoto works really well. Test videos are crisp and shake is well controlled. Of course some sort of support is needed at the end of the zoom range, but the images are excellent.
While obviously bigger than a compact, it is still quite light and the grip is very comfortable. Menu is straightforward and I put the full manual on my laptop and Ipad just in case.
The view finder has a diopter adjustment so I can leave my glasses on, which is a big help.
While not a professional by any means, many of my pictures get into reports and presentation so quality and high resolution is important. Need more time to cross check the quality of the colours in certain lights, but so far I am very happy with my purchase.
