I waited and waited for CamRanger to get their Android application done. Finally, I saw on their website that it was available, along with a PC application for Windows 7. Though, I read the Windows 7 application to be a beta version.

So, I ordered this $300 toy and it arrived today. I am using (attempting to use) it with a Nikon D600 and a Motorola XYBOARD (Xoom2 running Android 4.1).

I am seriously disappointed. First, the Android app is also a Beta version. Second, many features (use in PC mode, Exposure Bracketing, Time Lapse and others) simply do not work, or cause the application to crash. And, when the application crashes, it usually will not recognize that my camera is still connected. The only way to fix that is to disconnect, power down my tablet, restart the tablet and reconnect the camera. Then the CamRanger app will see it until the next time it crashes.

Thus, my advice is WAIT until they have more bugs fixed and have more features actually working. In the meantime, try DSLR Dashboard with the Nikon WiFi widget. It works just as well at this time. I'm going to keep it because I know the software will eventually get fixed. In the meantime it does seem to work on Advanced HDR (sort of bracketing) and focus bracketing.

Update August 20, 2013 CamRanger tech support has been helpful and an app update came out just today. It improved several items. Setting shot interval in time lapse still crashed my XOOM2 and I sent in a crash log. Heard back from CamRanger within hours. They believe they have that bug fixed and offered to send an update, or I could wait a few more days for a more inc.lusive update. I'm choosing to wait. The good news is that these folks are working to get the bugs out of the Android version. I know people using the iPad app, and it works just fine. Just going to take a bit more time. I bumped it up to three stars and will await further updates. It might still be good to hold off a couple of weeks. I'll post again when next update comes out.
