The title says it all. The wide shots allow more of the storm into the shot. This increases your chances of capturing a lightning shot or the structure of the entire storm, which I had to do in sections with my 18-55mm lens or my phone camera. It is also great for photographing city skylines, landscapes, and even things that are very close to you. In Memphis, for example, I came across a neat statue, but it was located feet away from a busy street. I could not capture it any other way because of the position of the sun, and I wanted the Memphis skyline behind it. I set the lens to its widest setting and captured the whole thing! It was also great to bring to southern France and Monaco. I could photograph the entire city of Nice from one vantage point, with the Alps in the background.
