This lens from Beach Camera was much cheaper than the Canon 28mm lens i was considering. Before i was using the canon 50mm lens with f1.8 and the standard zoom lens which at best was F4. The 50mm did a great job, i was able to take christmas pictures indoors with no flash and only using the regular house light. The pictures turned out spectacular and i was able to use the narrow depth of field to take some artsy photos. But, at 50mm on my t3i meant that i was zoomed in, and couldn't always get far enough away to take a good shot. I was really hurting for a 28-30mm lens.

When i bought the sigma, i thought F1.8 was already low enough, i wasn't enthusiastic about the extra 1.6 and 1.4 stop, it was just an added bonus. However after playing around with the lens, that extra .4 stop makes a world of difference in low light. For instance, i like to keep my shutter speed at least 1/40th of a second at a minimum. I also like to keep the iso as low as possible if i can to minimize noise. With the 1.8 50mm lens the same photo indoors would make my iso 1600 or 3200, the same photo taken at 1.4 dropped it down to 800iso, what a world of difference in terms of noise.

Of course, i bought this lens so i could be a reasonable distance from my subjects. This lens is as close to 1x normal human vision as possible. So what you see is what you'll get. The clarity is also great from the looks of my pictures, although i haven't done any scientific tests with it.

The only negative i have is you have to change the diopeter adjustment when switching between my other canon and the sigma lenses. Not a huge deal if you're just taking personal photos, but if you have a job where switching lenses is quite frequent, then it may be an issue.

Summary, if you want a lens for great narrow depth of field shots, low light photography, and a standard 1x prime for a majority of your shooting, this is it.
